NPDF Expresses outrage at Chicago PD’s Chief for refusing to assist ICE

Chicago, Illinois:

Executive Director Joseph Occhipinti and the Executive Board of the National Police Defense Foundation wish to express shock and outrage at reports that Chicago’s Chief of Patrol directed officers not to assist US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents when they were rammed and boxed in by protesters near Broadview, Illinois on October 4th, 2025.

One of the drivers accused of ramming into the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon, according to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. She said officers, who were unable to move, “were forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots at an armed U.S. citizen.” Details are still emerging, but it appears that officers from the Chicago Police Department were ordered not to assist this group of ICE agents while they were physically threatened by what appeared to be an angry mob. DHS said an ICE vehicle popped a tire and was subsequently mobbed by “domestic terrorists,” forcing agents to abandon the vehicle for their own safety. The vehicle was significantly damaged, DHS said.

The NPDF is gravely concerned about the stance the Chicago PD’s Chief of Patrol has taken in refusing to permit his officers to respond to requests for emergency police assistance from ICE when they are being threatened by firearms being displayed by radical protesters. Executive Director Joe Occhipinti is calling upon the Attorney General of the United States to investigate this intentional act of malfeasance by the Chicago Chief of Patrol.  He believes that any call for assistance by police officers must be answered, no matter what, and politics has no place in events when officers lives are at stake.

National Police Defense Foundation Executive Director Joseph Occhipinti calls on all members of law enforcement, as well as the public, to stand with ICE agents in their time of need and to make perfectly clear to the Chicago Chief of Patrol that his refusal to assist ICE agents in need is an abrogation of his oath of office and will not be tolerated. He MUST protect and defend the agents when called upon.

The National Police Defense Foundation is the proud sponsor of the congressionally recognized “Safe Cop” program that offers a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any suspect who shoots at, injures or kills a law enforcement officer or makes terroristic threats on social media.
