In April 2013, the NPDF similarly convinced the US Consul General at Guayaquil to issue an emergency visa for Ecuadorian Police Corporal Nancy Choto who had also been the victim of a line of duty “hit & run” accident that resulted in the loss of her leg. What was disturbing was that the officer’s spouse, also a police officer, was so overwhelmed by her disability that he committed suicide. The NPDF also learned about the plight of Corporal Choto at the same February 2012 police conference in Quito. The NPDF successfully coordinated this humanitarian project with the US Ambassador to Ecuador, US Consul General, Drug Enforcement Administration and the Police Attaché at the Ecuadorian Embassy in Washington, D.C. On April 8, 2013, Corporal Choto traveled to Oklahoma City where she received the donated prosthetic and successfully underwent three weeks of rehabilitation. On May 1, 2013, Corporal Choto appeared at the 2013 NPDF Annual Awards Dinner and in the presence of Ecuador’s Vice President Lenin Moreno received a “Valor Award”. Corporal Choto returned to her native country where she has returned to active duty as a police officer. |
