THE NPDF CALLS FOR THE FORMAL REVIEW OF DISCIPLINARY ACTION TAKES AGAINST COOK COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES
By NPDF Vice President Michael P. Barry
Chicago, Illinois:
The National Police Defense Foundation (NPDF) is calling for a thorough and impartial review of the disciplinary action taken against two Cook County Sheriff’s deputies whose actions were consistent with their training and established law-enforcement safety protocols.
The NPDF is particularly concerned that the deputies were disciplined for actions they were trained and required to take in the performance of their duties. The Foundation believes that imposing disciplinary measures under such circumstances raises serious concerns about officer safety and the ability of law-enforcement personnel to follow established safety procedures without fear of inappropriate repercussions.
“The men and women of law enforcement must be able to rely upon established safety protocols when responding to potentially dangerous situations,” said Joe Occhipinti, Executive Director of the National Police Defense Foundation. “When officers are disciplined for following procedures they have been trained and required to follow, the circumstances warrant careful and impartial examination.”
The NPDF calls upon the Office of the Chief Judge to conduct a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding the disciplinary action involving the two deputies and to determine whether further action is warranted.
The Foundation further believes that, should the review establish that the deputies were appropriately acting in accordance with their training and established safety procedures, an apology to the affected deputies would be appropriate.
The NPDF and its Executive Board also call upon members of the law-enforcement community and the public to support the Cook County Sheriff’s Department in seeking a formal Board of Inquiry into the matter. Such an inquiry should examine whether the actions attributed to Judge Lyke interfered with established Sheriff’s Department safety protocols and whether additional measures are necessary to ensure that law-enforcement personnel can safely and effectively perform their duties.
The NPDF emphasizes that established safety protocols serve an essential purpose: protecting law-enforcement officers, members of the public, and others involved in potentially hazardous encounters. Any action that could undermine the ability of officers to adhere to those protocols should receive careful and serious review.
The National Police Defense Foundation remains committed to protecting the rights of law-enforcement personnel and promoting policies and practices that support officer safety, professional accountability, and public safety.
