NPDF Pays $10,000 Safe Cop Reward to Informant in Murder of Melvindale Officer
The NPDF’s $10,000 Safe Cop reward was instrumental in developing information that led to the arrest and conviction of the killer of a Michigan police officer. Michael Lopez, 44, of Southfield, Michigan murdered Melvindale Police Cpl. Mohamed Said on July 21, 2024, after a traffic stop. Lopez was arrested the next day.
A jury found Lopez guilty on April 28, 2026. On June 5, 2026, Judge Bridget Hathaway sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The National Police Defense Foundation (NPDF) operates its Safe Cop program, which offers rewards of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone who shoots a law enforcement officer.
“The NPDF offers a reward for the conviction of anyone who shoots a cop. It does not matter where it happens; anywhere in the world, if you help convict a cop shooter, we will pay,” said NPDF Executive Director Joseph Occhipinti.
