Occhipinti, a Papal Knight recognized for his humanitarian efforts through NPDF’s Operation Kids program, was among 39 members honored with promotions in rank during the Order’s 2026 Investiture Weekend.
A Historic Ceremony at St. Patrick’s Cathedral
The 2026 Investiture Weekend marked 100 years of the Order’s service in the United States and the 75th anniversary of its Eastern Lieutenancy.
The historic celebration welcomed 64 new members, recognized the promotion of 39 existing members, and brought together more than 450 members, friends, and family.
A Centuries-Old Tradition of Faith and Service
The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem is one of the oldest and most distinguished chivalric orders of the Roman Catholic Church, with historical roots dating to the First Crusade in 1099.
Today, the Order continues its centuries-old mission of supporting the Christian presence in the Holy Land through charitable, educational, and humanitarian initiatives.
A Lifetime of Humanitarian Service
Throughout his distinguished career, Joseph Occhipinti has received numerous humanitarian awards and recognitions from members of the United States Congress, state legislatures, foreign governments, the United Nations, and Pope Francis.
Much of this recognition stems from his leadership of Operation Kids, an NPDF humanitarian initiative dedicated to arranging critical medical treatment and life-saving operations for seriously ill children.
His elevation to the rank of Commander represents another distinguished milestone in a lifetime dedicated to public service, humanitarian assistance, and helping those in need.
Celebrating a Distinguished Honor
Following the October 16 ceremony, Occhipinti joined fellow Knights and distinguished guests on October 17 for a formal black-tie celebration at Cipriani in Manhattan.
The National Police Defense Foundation congratulates Founder and Executive Director Joseph Occhipinti on this prestigious honor and his continued commitment to humanitarian service.
